We started the week of 8 June very joyful and highly, as we celebrated World Children’s Day in the school of La Sabanita. During this event we held speeches on the environment and recycling. We organised games for the students trying to leave them with some knowledge about how to look after the environment and how to divide waste into different categories (organic, inorganic and recyclable). The celebrations ended with two piñatas and lively music.
The children enjoyed themselves thoroughly, having had their faces painted and taken part in several rounds of skipping.
They were also very happy when we gave out small plants for them to take home as a little present and a way to promote reforestation in the community.
Apart from these activities in the school, this week we built more bins that will encourage the community to sort their rubbish and recycle, thereby helping the school to make a profit. We also started to build cement signs on behalf of the Volcano Masaya National Park, in order to promote responsible and eco-friendly behaviour in the area.
Despite the heavy rain for the entire week, we were always ready for the job: whether collecting tyres, cutting iron bars, building iron grates, handing out trees or celebrating with the children!
In order to make the work on the signs more efficient, we joined forces with Group 1 and, as expected, everything went smoothly and more quickly.
One of our main achievements, after a lot of digging and building, was to finish some of the bins and put them in the chosen locations around the community. The bins were made out of three or four tyres and filled with volcanic rock and cement to prevent rubbish or water to be trapped in them. The bins were then painted in different colours according to the type of waste they will contain (blue for plastic bottles, green for paper and red for cans and metal). When we open the recycling centre next week, we will also recommend that the population uses their organic waste as fertiliser for their vegetable patches and gardens.
Both national and British volunteers are working very hard to reach their goals in the time left and to complete the project for the wellbeing of the people and the improvement of the living conditions in the community of La Sabanita.

Acciones en pro del mejoramiento de la comunidad La Sabanita
Empezamos la semana del 8 de Junio muy contentos y con mucha motivación, porque celebramos el Día del Niño en la escuela de La Sabanita, donde se promovieron las charlas de medio ambiente y el reciclaje. Se hicieron juegos para dejar a los niños una idea de la importancia de cuidar el medio ambiente y cómo clasificar la basura en orgánica (cascaras de basuras de frutas) e inorgánica (plástico, vidrio, metal, papel). Se terminó la celebración con dos piñatas y música muy animada, donde los niños disfrutaron mucho, con pinta caritas y cuerdas para saltar.
Donamos plantas para promover la reforestación en la comunidad, empezando por los niños, los cuales las recibieron muy contentos.
Se construyeron los basureros que motivaran a que la población recicle y separe la basura para poder reutilizarla y obtener beneficios para la escuela, y elaboramos los materiales que se ocuparan para los rótulos, los cuales servirán para concientizar a la población para que cuiden el medio ambiente.
A pesar del clima, que estuvo muy lluvioso toda la semana, siempre estuvimos con los ánimos puestos, recogiendo llantas, cortando hierro, haciendo parrillas, donando plantas, y la celebración de los niños.
Para agilizar más el trabajo esta semana se unieron los dos grupos, de esa unión surgió un trabajo más eficaz y por lo tanto resulto mejor y más rápido.
Se pintaron los basureros para distinguir donde irá cada basura ya clasificada (azul para las botellas plásticas, verde para el papel y rojo para el metal y latas, y la orgánica. Se promoverá que la población la utilice en sus huertos como abono para sus plantas). Se colocaron los depósitos en los puntos elegidos, cada deposito se elaboró con tres o cuatro llantas y por dentro se les metió piedra volcánica con cemento para que la basura no se alojará dentro de las llantas.
Estamos trabajando juntos los voluntarios nacionales y británicos, dando nuestro mayor esfuerzo para cumplir con las metas propuestas y realizar el proyecto con eficacia y eficiencia para que la población este contenta y cada acción venga en pro del mejoramiento de la comunidad La Sabanita.
