Progressio doesn't only leave a better world for children to grow up in, but helps to educate them with the aim of making them better prepared for the world. Progressio ICS volunteers don't want to live without a purpose and for our contributions to be unhelpful. With our commitment to help those in need within our society we have handed out 220 fruit trees to 20 families in the community of La Sabanita. It is hoped that the children who live in these homes will care for them and in a few years time they will bear fruit for them to eat.
For our survival and that of other species, we need trees to help support improvements of living conditions in the long term. In the last cycle of ICS volunteers, we aimed to help the process of reforestation by handing out over 600 trees. In this cycle we aim to build on this impact by developing a programme of awareness of the issues.
In a previous blog, I mentioned that Progressio is a big family, now I think that this great family is growing furthermore. Word of what is being done is spreading and more people have offered to help the cause. Taking the trees to the beneficiary families' homes was a whole ceremony, the delivery transport took them to a central point in the village for distribution, from there we thought it would take us at least two days to deliver them. However, a mini miracle occurred and some of the village children helped: additional trucks, small boxes, trays, and some delivered by hand, all very helpful and in three hours they were all distributed to the 20 families.
Trees are the lungs of the world and in an area like this community, located at the foot of a volcano, they are vital to cool the soil and encourage rain, thus contribute to improve the agriculture conditions. We know that if a third of the planet was covered in trees, many of our current problems would be solved.
The acceptance of the project with Progressio has been satisfactory, and for the volunteers it's an experience that fills us with hope and desire to continue the struggle for a better world. Achieving goals that are small but generate a change, gives us the energy needed to continue and improve.
Seeing the children warmly receiving a plant, watering it daily, committed to the cause is enough to excite anyone. Also alongside this initiative, we set up a campaign to collect plastic bottles involving the student community of La Sabanita School. In a week they collected over twelve thousand bottles. We explained to them that the bottles are harmful to the environment if not recycled or re-used.
It was amazing to see children working for a goal, bringing bottles to school from distances of more than 2km, where their homes are located. The effort of the children is admirable, they have demonstrated how together they are ready to plant, harvest and collaborate, in order to build a better tomorrow.
A month after starting our placement in this community, we are more determined than ever to continue working for these children and to help them to contribute to a better world.

La niñez protagonista de historias
Progressio no solo deja un mundo mejor para la niñez, también educa con el objetivo de dejar mejores niños y niñas para el mundo. Las y los voluntarios de Progressio ICS no queremos vivir inútilmente. Por el compromiso de aportar un poco a nuestra sociedad, hemos entregado 220 árboles frutales a 20 familias de la comunidad La Sabanita. El propósito es que las y los niños que en ese hogar habiten las cuiden y que en pocos años den fruto.
Para nuestra supervivencia, y la de otras especies, necesitamos de los árboles. Para aportar a la mejora de las condiciones de vida a largo plazo estamos intentando reforestar. En el ciclo pasado de voluntarios y voluntarias ICS, se entregaron más de 600 plantas, y en este ciclo se pretende lograr un mayor impacto con actividades de sensibilización y concientización.
En un blog anterior mencionaba que Progressio es una gran familia. Ahora pienso que esta gran familia está creciendo, la voz de lo que se está haciendo corre rápido y más personas ayudan a la causa. Llevar los arboles a los hogares era toda una ceremonia, en transporte las llevamos hasta un punto para distribuirlas. Ahí pensamos que nos tomaría al menos dos días entregarlas, pero ocurrió el milagro que queríamos los y las niñas nos ayudaron con carretillas, cajillas, carretones. Sus manos fueron de gran ayuda y en tres horas estaban todas distribuidas en las 20 familias.
Los arboles son los pulmones del mundo y en una zona como esta comunidad ubicada a las faldas de un volcán son vitales para enfriar los suelos y hacer que la lluvia regrese aportando así a la mejora en las condiciones de la agricultura actual. Bien sabemos que si un tercio del planeta estuviera cubierto de arboles, muchos de nuestros problemas actuales estarían solucionados.
La aceptación del proyecto con Progressio ha sido satisfactoria. Para las y los voluntarios es una experiencia que nos llena de esperanza y ganas de seguir en la lucha por un mundo mejor, alcanzar objetivos que son pequeños, pero que generan un cambio nos da la energía necesaria para continuar y mejorar.
Ver a los y las niñas tomando con amor una planta, regándola a diario, comprometidos con la causa, emociona a cualquiera. Además junto a esta iniciativa se ha realizado una campaña de recolección de botellas plásticas por la comunidad estudiantil de la escuelita de la Sabanita, logrando en una semana más de doce mil embaces. Se les ha explicado que las botellas son perjudiciales para el medio ambiente, y que éstas además de contaminar hacen que el entorno sea notablemente desagradable.
Casi increíble ver a la niñez trabajando por alcanzar una meta trayendo botellas a la escuela desde distancias de más de 2km, donde se ubican sus hogares. El empeño que tiene la niñez es digno de admiración. Están preocupados por sembrar, cosechar y colaborar para construir un mejor mañana.
A un mes de estar en la comunidad, el ánimo es de continuar trabajando por esta niñez que desea contribuir a un mejor mundo.
