The UK and Nicaraguan ICS volunteers carried out surveys in La Sabanita to get an idea of the different problems the communities face and what their needs are. The surveyed communities were Romero Cerda and Calero.
In addition to identifying the needs of the communities, these surveys were necessary to identify the neediest families, those that would benefit most from the vegetable patches and the bins, where they could deposit waste instead of throwing it out on the streets or burning it.
These surveys allowed the volunteers to identify what sort of fruit and vegetables the families need for daily use, and assess whether the conditions were right for building the vegetable patches. They investigated the need for a recycling centre, since many people burn, bury, or throw out their rubbish on the streets. This damages the environment and people’s health. Since there is nowhere to deposit waste in the community, bins will be built and clearly labeled so that people can easily see how to recycle their rubbish. This will help the environment and the area in which people live, thus improving their standard of life.
The survey also looked into a potential investment in eco-stoves in future cycles, as people cook using firewood, usually chopping down the trees themselves to do so. This results in widespread deforestation of the community, causing environmental problems as well as health problems for the families, since many of them suffer from respiratory illnesses.
Furthermore, many people mentioned the need for reforestation of public areas, in particular the park, the school, the square and the church, where people could enjoy some shade and pass the time in a reforested area.
The UK and Nicaraguan volunteers have worked hard to be able to implement these projects designed to help the communities. The inhabitants hope to improve their standard of living, since for many resources are scarce and they too hope to offer their support, so that these projects can be successful.

Voluntarios y voluntarias realizan encuestas
Las y los voluntarias/os Nicaragüenses y británicos levantaron encuestas en la comunidad La Sabanita para conocer los diferentes problemas que estas personas enfrentan y saber acerca de sus necesidades, las comunidades encuestadas fueron Romero Cerda y Calero.
Las encuestas además de realizarse para conocer las necesidades se realizaron para identificar las familias que necesitan y que pueden ser beneficiadas con huertos familiares y basureros para depositar los desechos y que estos no sean echados a las calles o sean quemados.
A través de las encuestas se pudo identificar qué tipo de hortalizas las personas pueden necesitar para su consumo diario, por otro lado se pudo analizar si las condiciones eran óptimas para crear un huerto familiar, además la necesidad de que se construya un centro de reciclaje, ya que muchos queman la basura, la entierran o la echan a las calle creando así contaminación ambiental y diferentes enfermedades, ya que las personas no tienen dónde ir a depositar la basura es por esa razón que también se realizaran basureros, para que las personas puedan identificar de manera más facial como poder reciclar, esta acción ayudara al medio ambiente y al entorno en que viven estas familias mejorando así sus condiciones de vida.
Así mismo la encuesta también analizo la posible inversión de crear eco fogones, para los próximos ciclos, ya que la población cocina con leña y muchas veces éstos cortan árboles para poder cocinar desforestando así la comunidad y creando problemas ambientales y afectando de manera involuntaria su salud y la de su familia, porque muchos padecen enfermedades respiratorias.
Por otro lado durante la encuesta las personas expresaron la necesidad de que se pueda reforestar lugares públicos de la comunidad, siendo los más mencionados el parque, la escuela, la plaza y la iglesia, esto con el objetivo de que las personas puedan distraerse y disfrutar de sombra y un buen ambiente en un área reforestada.
De esta manera las y los voluntarias/os británicos y nicaragüenses han trabajado para poder realizar estos posibles proyectos que ayuden a estas comunidades y por ende a la población, ya que la población desea apoyar y mejorar sus condiciones de vida, ya que el recibimiento de las familias fue bastante ameno y ellos esperan también apoyar para poder llevar con éxito estos proyectos.
